How to bleed your lifters

CAUTION:

  • Lifters are precision mechanisms. Do not allow them to become contaminated by dirt or other foreign substances.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble lifters.
  • The steel ball spring is extremely weak. If wire is pushed in with too much force or used to pump the lifter piston, the lifter will be damaged.
  1. Stand lifter up on its base with top hole facing up.
  2. Using an eye dropper, fill the lifter cavity with oil until it flows out of the hole in the side. (You can also choose to submerge the lifter in oil).
  3. Insert a small, smooth ended, wire (~0.5mm dia.) into the top hole and GENTLY push down the internal steel ball and simultaneously push the lifter piston down with your other hand. DO NOT pump the lifter piston with the wire inserted into the top hole as this will damage the ball or spring. Make sure the inside of the lifter stays full of oil during this process.
  4. The motion performed in Step 3 will push out any air that was inside the bottom of the lifter and fill the base with oil. The lifter should feel solid after this step. If it is not, repeat steps 2-3.
